TEEN CEO DAY

PARENT AND STUDENT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Coming Spring 2019

What is Teen CEO Day? Teen CEO Day is a one-day event in Rock Hill that will introduce 5,000 8th grade students in York, Lancaster and Chester Counties to exciting career opportunities in “STEM” fields (science, technology, engineering and math) that are available right here in this area. It will allow area companies and agencies an opportunity to provide information on their company or agencies to students as well as teachers.

Where and when will the event take place? The event will take place in the Spring of 2019 in Winthrop Coliseum on the Winthrop University campus. More information will be released soon. The company exhibits will be set up on the upper level of the Coliseum.

How is the event structured? Students will arrive on the campus in groups of 1,500. Half of the students will attend the company exhibits and the remaining students will listen to the career speaker. Students will spend one hour in each location. The students will each have a portfolio with suggested questions to ask of at least four companies. They will record the answers to their questions in the portfolio. Students who complete the portfolio activity with the required information will be eligible for a chance to win prizes.

What kind of questions will the students ask?

The following is a list of suggested questions:

  1. Describe a typical day in your job.
  2. What jobs are needed by your company or agency?
  3. What level of education is needed to be employed?
  4. What skills, knowledge, and/or personal qualities are important for this job?
  5. What opportunities are there to move up in your field?
  6. What is the average salary for your job?
  7. What do you like best about your job?
  8. What do you find most challenging about your job?
  9. What advice do you have for someone wanting to go into this field?

What Schools will participate in the event? 8th grade students and teachers from the York, Lancaster and Chester County Schools will participate.

Why is there a need for this day? South Carolina is faced with a major shortage of graduates from science, technology, engineering and math fields. This shortage is creating a major barrier to economic development, innovation and entrepreneurship in the state and the region. The event will provide students a better understanding of the wide variety of careers available in the region.

Who is sponsoring the day? The STEM Development Foundation is coordinating the day along with the City of Rock Hill, various economic development agencies and local businesses. The foundation board identified the need to sponsor this event and other activities to foster economic development and fill the talent void in the region.

Why have these events for 8th Grade students? Introducing 8th grade students to potential career opportunities gives students’ time to make good choices to achieve future career goals. 8th grade students are at the point in their education where they need to focus on skills and knowledge needed to find careers of interest. High School curriculum provides opportunities and support to prepare students with the necessary skills and qualifications required for future careers.

What is the STEM Development Foundation? The foundation is a 501 C3 nonprofit that was created to help communities gain a better understanding of the need for students trained in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), work to increase the number of students, especially the disadvantaged, in STEM programs in K-12, Technical and Community Colleges and Universities, and to be a hub of STEM activities.
